Thankful for Teachers!

Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week. Education has always been an important part of my life. Throughout my childhood and teen years, I was inspired by so many of my teachers and appreciate all of the valuable lessons they taught me. I still think of a few of them quite often even though I’ve been out of high school for over 30 years. I’m thankful for the way each of them touched my life!

Since I don’t have children, I decided to pay tribute to a couple of my friends who are educators by sending them handmade cards. I’ve held off posting this until I felt they’d hopefully both had time to receive their cards. In addition to being educators, both ladies are also staff at the local Weight Watchers center where I attend meetings, so they teach in that respect as well. I’ve learned so much from both of them and I have no doubt that they equally touch the lives of the children they teach.

Pink Teacher CardThis is the card I made for Jacki. She is actually a school principal now rather than being in the class. The digistamp image I used is Backpack Marci from La-La Land Crafts. She is also available as a rubber stamp. I printed her on some Spectrum Noir Ultra-Smooth Card Stock on my laser printer. I then colored her with my Copic markers and fussy cut her out.

As a brief aside, the Spectrum Noir paper is my absolute favorite paper (of the four I’ve tried) to use when I’m coloring with my Copic markers. I’m planning to write a paper comparison post soon with my thoughts and opinions of each.  I have a couple of others I would still like to buy and try before I write that post.

Here are the Copic colors I used for this card:

  • Skin: E50, E51, E53, RV42
  • Hair: E21, E25, E29
  • Apple: R27, R29, R59 (leaves: YG17, YG23)
  • Shirt/Headband/Socks: RV10, RV13, RV14 (buttons: B39)
  • Skirt: B45, B99, B39
  • Shoes: W3, W5, W7 for upper; C3, C5, C7 for soles, Y28 for buckles
  • Backpack: E33, E35, E37, Y28 for buckle

The sentiment was also part of the digistamp set, so that was also printed out on my laser printer on the same card stock. I stamped the tag around the sentiment in Cotton Candy ink from Close to My Heart using the small tag stamp from the Winter Gifts set from Lawn Fawn. Even though I have the coordinating Tag, You’re It dies for that stamp set, I opted to fussy cut out the tag instead since the die also punches a hole in the tag and I didn’t want that for this particular use.

It was then time to assemble my card. For the base, I used Marshmallow heavyweight card stock from Bazzill. I adhered the fun floral patterned paper panel to the card base using my Xyron Mega Runner. The paper is from the Hello Sunshine 6×6 paper pad from Doodlebug Design. I used Scotch foam tape to adhere a smaller piece of pink card stock, from the Olivia collection by Bazzill, that I die cut using a stitched rectangle die (I used the second largest size) from Simon Says Stamp.  I used a combination of regular tape runner and foam tape to adhere the sentiment since it I wanted it flat against the pink, but it would need to be popped over the patterned paper to match the height of the popped pink panel. Finally, I adhered Marci to the pink panel using more of the foam tape to give her a little dimension. I added some red Wink of Stella to the apple and then covered it with Glossy Accents to give it some nice shine and dimension. I also added a bit of clear Wink of Stella to the buckles on her shoes and backpack. I finished things off by adding three Bright Glitter Sprinkles dots from Doodlebug Design that coordinate with the patterned paper.

Teacher Inside CardFor a little bit of added interest inside the card, I added a small apple there, too. This individual apple was also part of the Backpack Marci digistamp set. Since I wanted it to just be an accent on the inside of the card, I scaled it down to 60% of the original size when I printed it. I then colored it using the same colors that I used for the apple in the main image. I adhered it to the card using a bit of Multi-Medium Matte since it was so tiny.

Yellow Teacher CardThe made this card for Summer. It’s basically identical to the first card, but in a different colorway. I used some slightly different Copic colors for Marci on this card, too. Here are the colors I used for this version:

  • Skin: E51, E11, BV00, R20
  • Hair: E50, E33, E57, E59
  • Apple: R27, R29, R59 (leaves: YG17, YG23)
  • Shirt/Headband/Socks: Y15, Y35, Y38 (buttons: E59)
  • Skirt: B95, B97, B99, B39
  • Shoes: W3, W5, W7 for upper; C3, C5, C7 for soles, Y28 for buckles
  • Backpack: E33, E35, E37, Y28 for buckle

The patterned paper and glitter enamel dots are from the same Doodlebug Design packs I used for the first card. The ink I used for the tag on this card is Honey, also from Close to My Heart. The yellow panel is die cut from Sunshine card stock by Simon Says Stamp. I used more of the glitter dots on this card, but in a slightly larger size to try and match the dot size on the patterned paper. I also included the small apple on the inside of this card.

I’ve also decided to enter this card into a challenge. I will be entering it into Hazel’s Patterned Paper challenge for May.

Until next time …
