Health Update

As some of you may remember, I posted the Calling All Sistahs – Self-Exam Reminder a couple of weeks ago. In that post, I shared I found a lump during my self-exam earlier this month and was going through the process of getting referrals to specialists, getting appointments scheduled for various tests, etc. The worst part through it all was the waiting. The waiting to know whether or not I would ultimately hear the dreaded “c” word.

Thankfully, I learned today that I DON’T have breast cancer. The lump I felt is an “oil cyst” (a type of scar tissue specific to the breast) that is likely the result of a large bruise I had earlier in the fall. I will see a surgeon in about three weeks for a needle aspiration to remove the fluid, then I’ll see the radiologist again in three months for a follow-up ultrasound to make sure it’s diminishing. For now though, I’m just grateful it’s not cancer. I watched my first cousin battle breast cancer for several years before finally succumbing to it. So, for today, I will breathe deep and be thankful.

Until next time …

My Mom had many scares and then did end up with breast cancer but she has been cancer free for over 7 years now! Thank God, I still need her!

I’m thrilled to hear your news. I went through something similar a few years ago and know just what you were going through and how relieved you feel now!!

Thanks, Sharon! I’m 51 and this was my first experience with finding a lump, so I was pretty freaked out by the whole process. So glad you’ve always had good news with yours, too!!
