Last week as I was perusing some of the card making blogs I follow, I saw this photo. It immediately made me think of the Up and Away stamp set from Mama Elephant. I bought this stamp set a couple of years ago, but had never actually used it. Shame on me! After seeing all of the brightly colored umbrellas in the photo, I came up with the idea for this card.
I love using rainbow colors on my cards whenever possible, so this design worked perfectly for that since you need a little rain to have a rainbow. I started by creating a simple mask of the umbrella image using some Post-It tape. I then stamped all the umbrellas and monkey on my panel [3-7/8 x 5.5″] using Memento Tuxedo Black ink since I planned to use my Copic markers to color them. Here is a list of the colors I used for each umbrella, most of which came from the Copic Blending Group list by Sandy Allnock:
- Red – R17, R37, R89
- Orange – YR02, YR16, E07
- Yellow – Y11, Y17, YR14
- Green – YG11, YG17, G28
- Blue – B00, B02, B05
- Indigo – B23, B24, B37
- Violet – V12, V04, V06
I used these colors for the monkey:
- Face and Tummy: E31, E33, E35, R20
- Feet: E31, R20
- Body and Tail: E35, E37, E39
Once I had everything colored, I added a generous layer of Glossy Accents to each balloon. I this would not only give them the super shiny look I wanted, but it would also give them a bit of dimension. After I had them all coated, I set the panel aside to dry. Since I had used such a generous layer, it took quite a while for it the completely dry, but it was worth the wait, I love how they came out! I then added my sentiment using VersaFine Onyx Black ink.
To create the card, I made an A2 top-folding card base from thick white cardstock. I added a black and white striped detail along the left edge of the card base using the black collection of Shape ‘n Tape from We R Memory Keepers. I adhered my main panel to the card base flush right using some foam tape. To finish off the card, I stamped one final umbrella on the inside of the card using Smoky Slate ink. To keep it nice and subtle, I stamped off on a piece of scratch paper first before stamping on my card.
I’m entering this card in the following challenges:
- Just Add Ink – the current theme is a photo challenge.
- Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge – the current theme is Come Rain or Shine.
- Sunday Stamps – the current theme is Rainbow Fun.
Quite often, I design cards around specific challenges. In this case, other than the original inspiration photo from the Just Add Ink challenge, it just so happened my card fit beautifully into the other challenges as well. What a happy coincidence! I just missed out on the latest CASology challenge as well which was Weather. It ended earlier today, but I didn’t have a chance to get my blog post up before the link-up closed.
Until next time …
