We’re kicking off our fourth Encouragement Challenge today over on the Calling All Sistahs blog. As always, this month’s challenge is presented by CAS-ual Fridays Stamps (CFS). The winner of this challenge will receive a $25 gift certificate to the CFS store. However, if the winning card uses CFS stamps or dies, the gift certificate value will be DOUBLED to $50! So, pull out your stamps and play along with us.
For my inspiration card, I hit both the color challenge and the photo inspiration all in one fell swoop on this one layer card. It was so easy to do using the fabulous new Mermaids stamp set from CFS! It’s perfect for scene building cards. As for the challenge, you don’t have to do both. You can let either the color combination or the photo inspire you, or both. It’s entirely up to you!
I started by using Disress Inks to create the ink blended background for my scene. I used a combination of Brushed Corduroy and Walnut Stain for the sandy bottom. I used Mermaid Lagoon for the lighter blue just above the sand then blended it up into Salty Ocean at the top part of the card. To intensify the colors, I added just a little bit of Chipped Sapphire around the edges of all the blue and a bit of Ground Espresso around the sandy portion.
To give the illusion of some bubbles in my ocean, I added some water droplets onto the blue portion of the card and then blotted it away after a few seconds to remove some of the ink. To give my water a little more “movement,” I randomly stamped some of the little swirl and bubble images from the Mermaids stamp set from CFS. Finally, to give a look of sunlight coming down through the water, I applied the Rays stencil from Tim Holtz over the top of my card then removed some of the ink by lightly rubbing a baby wipe through the stencil. I then added some clear Sparkle pen from Spectrum Noir over the rays I created to give them a bit of shimmer.
Once I had my background done, I stamped the shellebrate sentiment and one of the mermaid images from the stamp set using Midnight ink from Catherine Pooler Designers. Since she is a silhouette image, I used my Mini MISTI so I could double stamp the image to ensure full coverage. I decided to add a bit more to the scene by stamping some shells, starfish, and coral images in the sandy portion using Walnut Stain ink.
The final step of my card was adding the little oyster in her hand. It lined up really well, so I didn’t even have to do any masking. Yay! To highlight the pearl, I used a Fantastix and added a bit of Frost White All-Purpose Ink from Tsukineko. When the ink was dry, I added some Glossy Accents to give the pearl a bit of dimension as well and that completed my card.
I hope you’ll head over to the Calling All Sistahs blog to not only check out all the other fabulous creations from my fellow Encouragement Squad team members, but to play along with us as well! If you missed seeing the winner of last month’s challenge, you can find the announcement here.
Until next time …
